Module 5: Responses to Race
Part 9: Responses to race - optimistic Closure

This module has explored various responses to race that range from colorblindness to fatigue. Each response may be connected to levels of identity development, but the hope is to move to antiracism - actions that work against racist ideas, actions, policies, and systems. Oppressive systems can only be changed when they are identified and the capacity is built for engaging in antiracist work.

Consider the points in the document as you reflect on the responses to race.

After you reflect on this fourth module, proceed to Module 6: Education which will overview issues, consequences, and responses to racism in education.

&1: Responses to Race - Optimistic Closure

This module highlighted responses to race and racism. Reflect on the information you learned or reviewed. Use the following questions to help you consider what you have learned and what you will do moving forward.

Reflect:
  • What did you learn about the various responses to race that you could apply to your own life?
  • What have you learned that has changed your thinking?
  • What have you learned or realized in this process that you would like to celebrate and build on?
  • How could you use what you have learned about responses to race to improve your interactions with students?
  • How could you use what you have learned about responses to race to improve your interactions with colleagues?

The next module will narrow the focus to explore how race and racism relate to education.
