This part looks at the practice of "redlining" and its lasting impacts on segregation, homeownership, and wealth disparities in the United States. Gentrification is also presented, including its relationship to redlining.
&1: Redlining & Gentrification
As noted in previous parts, systemic racism includes economic impacts, including homeownership and accumulation of generational wealth. Redlining was a practice endorsed by the federal government that directly contributed to segregated communities and the financial oppression of many People of Color.

Another process that serves to make neighborhoods economically inaccessible is gentrification. The process also changes the cultural identity of the community. The Urban Displacement Project helps to explain gentrification and its relationship to redlining. Gentrification often occurs in areas that were once redlined and labeled as hazardous.
